Did you know that history states the original sport of Polo originated in India and was then taken up in England by returning soldiers. The Polo playing shirt used to be a long sleeved shirt & was the first collared garment to have a buttoned-down collar, which polo players invented in the late 19th century to keep their collars from flapping in the wind. Brooks Brothers's early president, John Brooks, noticed this while at a polo match in England and began producing such a shirt in 1896.

They have obviously since lost their button down collar & gained a buttoned placket but none of their popularity as a sports and casual leisure or uniform garment essential with Ralph Lauren’s iconic polo shirt probably taking the top spot in popularity, linking the original history with its modern day equivalent. Finally when it comes to the important logo or brand aspect did you know the reason why branding is virtually always on the left chest of a garment? It’s so when people shake hands the #branding is still on show, because if it was on the right side it would be hidden. It’s also great that this sport has opened up the doors to every gender so we thought we would feature some younger female polo players that are just as tough as their male counterparts.

Our very own merchandise in action was on show on Sunday 10th February on and off the pitch with our pop up shop at the AJ Bell Stadium for the first in a series of games we will be attending throughout the season which will extend our 24/7 web shop solution to the fans on match day. It was certainly a cold and breezy one with that wind whipping in from the Manchester Ship Canal! It was great to meet so many fans who loved the merchandise with the big sellers on the day being the new Kappa 2019 home and away replica shirts, the Kappa player polo and the retro bobble hat, but top sales item on the day was the new Red Devils fan scarf, knitted to a high definition quality and an absolute must to keep that chill off you.

The lads on the pitch certainly went hard & did their best to keep the fans warm making it 2 W’s from 2 games and currently sitting top of Super League after a 24-0 victory over London Broncos. With mental health awareness currently being very much in the spotlight in the media and high on the agenda for our health services across the UK, it reminded Wild Thang of some great Merchandise In Action with royal approval. The image shows Prince William & Princess Kate in charge of kicking off proceedings at the London Marathon wearing branded jackets to help shine a spotlight on mental health campaign, Heads Together, which was also the marathon’s official charity that year.

Well check out the world’s largest marker pen measuring a record breaking 1.684 m (5 ft 6.3 in) long and 25.6 cm (10.08 in) wide that’s 12 times larger than the regular sized marker pen! The marker weighs 17.48 kg (38 lb 8.64 oz) with ink amount of 3.14 kg (6 lb 14.72 oz). achieved by Zebra Co., Ltd. (Japan) in Shinjuku, Tokyo, on 5 September 2017.

MARKER PENS

At Wild Thang you know we love all things big, huge, massive related to products we sell. Check out the world’s largest biggest ball point pen and its subsequent photoshoot in Hyderabad, India. The enormous pen was made by Archarya Makunuri Srinivasa (India) and part of its meaningfulness comes from the fact that it was inspired by a pen his mother gave him as a young boy. Engraved with scenes from Indian mythology, Archarya’s magnificent creation measures 5.5 m (18 ft 0.53 in) in length – about 38 times the size of a regular biro – and weighs a hefty 37.23 kg (82.08 lb 1.24 oz).
